This week’s new releases include Berberian Sound Studio, Total Recall, Samsara and Cockneys Vs. Zombies

Berberian Sound Studio

British director Peter Strickland follows his Romanian set revenge drama, Katalin Varga, with this Italian giallo inspired deconstruction of the horror genre. Toby Jones plays Gilderoy, a sound engineer who’s sent to Italy to work on a gruesome horror film about witchcraft and the persecution of women. However, when art begins to imitate life he finds the horrors he witnesses on screen begin to manifest themselves within his own nightmares. Building a profoundly unsettling atmosphere akin to the work of David Lynch, this Dario Argento inspired narrative is far more of a psychological examination of fear than its generic façade would have you believe.

Total Recall

Len Wiseman’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s classic Sci-Fi is set to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters of this year. With a production budget in excess of $200 million and an A-list cast, expect an action-heavy adventure. Colin Farrell takes over where Schwarzenegger left off as Douglas Quaid and Kate Beckinsale is in to play the role previously occupied by Sharon Stone.

Samsara

Back in 1992, Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson brought us Baraka, a documentary without words that involved filming human life around the world in a conceptual and thoroughly beautiful manner. With Samsara they are back at their craft again, capturing varied and yet intrinsically linked occurrences on Earth with a stunning majesty, all on 70mm film. A visceral, captivating experience that will delight fans of art house fare.

Cockneys Vs. Zombies

Directed by Matthias Hoene, Cockneys vs. Zombies is the story of a group of inner city youths trying to save their granddad’s nursing home by robbing a bank, only to discover Zombies have over run the East End.
