James Cameron Wins Avatar Court Battle

On Monday (17 September) a case suing James Cameron and 20th Century Fox over Avatar was thrown out of court by a federal judge.

The plantiff was a man named Elijah Schkeiban, who penned a screenplay titled ‘Bats and Butterflies’ a few years before Avatar got off the ground.

The court decreed that the screenplay and Cameron’s Avatar were “not substantially similar”.

Schkeiban had been seeking a payout from Cameron for what he believed were notable parallels.

The case is not the first to have been brought against Avatar, though none of the other previous efforts have been successful either.

The film is the highest-grossing picture ever, having raked in about $2.8 billion worldwide.

Cameron has recently confirmed two more Avatar films and rumoured a fourth.
